Campaign to watch: Karma Koin.

What goes around comes around, and that’s why Karma Koin is pledging to raise $250,000 for charity: water. They’ve always given away 1% of every purchase made with their prepaid cards, but when they found out about our September Campaign for Rwanda, they committed to funding an entire water project. If they’re successful, Karma Koin will help us build the whole Kirikumuryango Spring Protection System which can serve 16 tap stands–including two schools, a clinic, and a community center–and give clean water to 3,600 people in Shyorongi, Rwanda.

Our sixth birthday party: all grown up.

charity: water began with a birthday party. On September 7, 2006, founder Scott Harrison asked friends to give $20 at the door and, in one foot-loose night, they funded life-saving water projects in Uganda.

Last Friday, September 7, we celebrated our sixth birthday at the gorgeous Hudson Terrace in Manhattan. Everyone was invited, and in honor of our current September Campaign, we charged $65 per ticket — the cost to give clean water to one person in Rwanda.

That night, we raised a total of $20,115, which means 309 more people will have access to clean, safe water.
Just because we threw a party.

Work is already beginning in Rwanda, thanks to our awesome supporters, so we paused to share this quick video shot that same day by our team in the field. We cheered and then we danced.

Enjoy the night in pictures:

Huge thanks to Hudson Terrace for hosting, VeeV and Anheuser-Busch for the libations, and Anthony Batista for spinning great tunes.

from the office: Town Hall and NYSE

Tuesday night, in the midst of the September Campaign, charity: water’s staff paused to think big picture. For our semi-annual Town Hall meeting, we talked strategy to reach our organizational goal of giving clean water to 100 million people. We’ve served 2.5 million people already but that means we’re only 2.5% of the way there, so these updates are crucial to keep us on track.

Then we took a break from business to honor four hard-working colleagues–Jasdeep Gosal, Melissa Burmester, Bill Bell, and Stephanie Goetz, who, as MVP of MVPs, was awarded Jerry, the mustachioed bunny (named after our Jerry can logo).

The very next afternoon, those MVPs got to join a few others of the charity: water team to ring the closing bell at the New York Stock Exchange. Over 100 million people from around the world watch this event every day – now that many more people know about us and our current September Campaign for Rwanda.

from the field: Mekelle’s mourning

Christy Scazzero

The death of a leader is always traumatic. When the Prime Minister of Ethiopia passed away earlier this week, his native region of Tigray virtually shut down.

That’s where our Water Program Development Leader, Christy Scazzero, found herself yesterday, surrounded by the surreal scene of public mourning. As part of a three-week site tour, Christy was visiting our partners at REST (Relief Society of Tigray) when Meles Zenawi, 57, died unexpectedly.

So when every last person in the city of Mekelle walked to the towering war memorial to mourn, Christy joined REST’s delegation. She called the experience incredible. And by joining REST’s staff during this emotional time, she got to know our biggest implementing partners just a little better.
