Looking back at World Water Day 2012

On March 22, we celebrated World Water Day with one of our biggest asks ever — we asked everyone we knew (and didn’t know) to give up their next birthday, ask for donations instead of presents, and help give people clean water. So far, over 12,000 of you have pledged, and we’re just getting started. Why birthdays? It all started when founder Scott Harrison gave up his birthday five and a half years ago. Since then, thousands of people have done the same, helping millions of people get access to clean water. We believe birthdays can change the world, but don’t take it from us. Hear from the people who’ve done it in this video.

When World Water Day rolled around, more than 5,400 of you pledged to give up your next birthday for clean water. In the weeks that followed, that number has grown to more than 12,000!

charity: water staff, volunteers and supporters gathered in the office on World Water Day, and emailed, tweeted and called everyone we knew to get the word out. As a result, we saw #worldwaterday trend on Twitter across the USA. Many of you also donated to bring clean water to people in need. We’re so grateful to all of you who joined us and so passionately gave your support.

Let’s make World Water Day all about birthdays.

Today is World Water Day, where people around the globe recognize the need for clean drinking water. We’re using today to talk about… birthdays.

Five and a half years ago, charity: water began with a birthday party. Founder Scott Harrison gave up his 31st birthday gifts and asked for donations to water projects instead. He used 100% of the money to fund clean water for communities in northern Uganda. Since then, we’ve made it our goal to bring clean, safe drinking water to people in developing countries.

We believe birthdays can change the world, but don’t just take it from us… take it from the people who have given up their birthdays for clean water before! Watch our fundraisers explain how their birthdays have changed the world:

World Water Day is this Thursday, March 22… and we’re planning something big! We’ve got all hands on deck, including some of our incredible and dedicated volunteers here in New York City. Check out a few photos from last week’s Volunteer Night, where more than 80 volunteers joined us to plan World Water Day:

You funded a drilling rig… and now, it’s going to work!

In September 2011, we asked you to help fund charity: water’s first drilling rig to bring clean water to 40,000 new people every year in rural Ethiopia. More than 1,400 mycharity: water fundraisers and donors answered in a big way, raising more than $1.2 million for a brand new drilling rig fleet.

By now, you probably know we’re big on showing impact. From proving every completed water project with photos and GPS to sharing stories from people you’ve helped get clean water to drink — we want you to see how you’ve changed lives.

And today… we have exciting news! We were expecting to drill the first well with the new rig in May of this year. But Founder Scott Harrison was just in Ethiopia and… the first drilling rig arrived early!

Take a look at how your support is already helping bring life’s most basic need to people in Ethiopia:

We’re so grateful for your support of our work, our partners’ work, and our mission to end the water crisis. Thank you, September Campaign supporters! And stay tuned: as promised, we’re getting the GPS device set up in this rig soon so you can track its progress from village to village.
