You funded a drilling rig… and now, it’s going to work!

In September 2011, we asked you to help fund charity: water’s first drilling rig to bring clean water to 40,000 new people every year in rural Ethiopia. More than 1,400 mycharity: water fundraisers and donors answered in a big way, raising more than $1.2 million for a brand new drilling rig fleet.

By now, you probably know we’re big on showing impact. From proving every completed water project with photos and GPS to sharing stories from people you’ve helped get clean water to drink — we want you to see how you’ve changed lives.

And today… we have exciting news! We were expecting to drill the first well with the new rig in May of this year. But Founder Scott Harrison was just in Ethiopia and… the first drilling rig arrived early!

Take a look at how your support is already helping bring life’s most basic need to people in Ethiopia:

We’re so grateful for your support of our work, our partners’ work, and our mission to end the water crisis. Thank you, September Campaign supporters! And stay tuned: as promised, we’re getting the GPS device set up in this rig soon so you can track its progress from village to village.

charity: water is five years old!

You may have noticed we haven’t been blogging much lately. And today, on our fifth birthday, you’ll understand why: we just spent the last week and a half shooting, producing and uploading 250 videos to send individually to some of our fundraisers and supporters. Whew! It was a crazy, exciting, funny and beautiful project.

Watch the story of our fifth birthday celebration:

It’s been rewarding for all of our staff — from web developers to accountants to designers — to learn the details about campaigners and then jump behind the camera to get real with each of them. charity: water turns five today. In the last half decade, we’ve been able to serve more than two million people with clean and safe drinking water.

But that never would’ve happened if we didn’t have the supporters who took our story and made it theirs.

You can see all of our thank-you’s on our new YouTube channel here:

And to give you a taste, here are some favorites from each staff member team:

Greg + Nat for Hope Mural Roadshow.

Emily + Robin for Tango to the People.

Vik + Erica for Cecilia’s campaign “Hamsters Deserve Clean Water.”

Lindsay + Jasdeep for Developers Against Poverty.

Jonna + Shayna for Pullman High.

Mo + Josh for Michelle,
the hotdog champion.

Lauren + Michael for Audrey, who gave up her third birthday.

Christy + Michael (and staff’s help!) for UA/OSU.

Merry + Brian for Erica, a rockstar campaigner.

Paull + Sarah for Sabin the dog.

Happy birthday to charity: water! Thank you so much for being a part of our story.

Update: Rachel’s campaign breaks through $1 million.

She started her campaign hoping to raise $300 to bring clean water to 15 people.

Today, friends and strangers helped Rachel Beckwith top $1 million raised in her mycharity: water campaign.

rachel 1 million

No one at charity: water has been following Rachel’s campaign as closely as Founder and CEO Scott Harrison. Here are a few thoughts from him to those who have helped Rachel’s wish come true:

rachel

To everyone who has supported Rachel’s campaign: you are a part of a huge and sweeping movement of generosity, compassion and honor. More than 23,000 people from across the globe have now left donations and messages for Rachel, and her story has even spread throughout Africa.

You may have seen this, but yesterday, New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof wrote an incredible op-ed piece entitled “Rachel’s Last Fund-Raiser.” He captured Rachel’s spirit in a profound and powerful way, and I encourage you to read and share the piece if you haven’t seen it yet.

When Rachel’s campaign closes, 100% of the funds raised will go straight to our partners in the field, so they can begin building more water projects for people in need. About 18 months later, when these projects are finished, charity: water will share the GPS coordinates, photos and other details about each community Rachel’s campaign funded water for.

All of us at charity: water have been humbled by the sacrifice and unselfishness of this remarkable little girl. To borrow Nick Kristof’s words, may we all learn from Rachel Beckwith.

– Scott Harrison
