Carolyn Boyce
School or Current Job: New York University
From: Cincinnati, OH

Fun fact about you:
I’ve been to 30 out of 50 states, including Alaska and Hawaii.

What does a typical day in the office look like for you?
Lots of donor research! I’m all about figuring out who should know about charity: water, helping more people to get on board with our mission, and making sure donors are happy with their charity: water experience. I work with big lists of donors in Excel, go to Growth meetings, and cover the reception desk sometimes too.

What’s your favorite project so far in your internship?
Right now, I’m working on coming up with a process to re-engage donors with different charity: water experiences. For example, if someone gives a big gift to a friend’s mycharity: water campaign, could they also be a Water Project Sponsor?

What’s your favorite thing about working at charity: water?
Beer and pizza! It’s a great way to unwind after the work week, and get to know people you wouldn’t normally talk to.

What are your hobbies outside of work?
Lots of my friends at NYU are actors and musicians, so I go to a lot of their shows and concerts. I also love trying out new restaurants and reading.

What’s the most adventurous thing you’ve ever done?
I went hang gliding in California a couple summers ago. It was so cool, I felt like a bird flying above the beach!

Tell us about your proudest accomplishment.
My friends and I planned a week-long arts festival last November, to showcase all of our talented friends. Over 500 students ended up attending to see our 30 featured student artists. It was a lot of work, but everyone loved the events, and we’ll probably do another one next year.

What’s on your NYC bucket list for this spring/summer?
Visit the two boroughs I’ve never been to (Queens and Staten Island), watch the St. Patrick’s Day Parade and the Coney Island Mermaid Parade, Shakespeare in the Park, and go to a Mets game when they play the Reds.

What’s your spirit animal? Why?
I’m totally a cat person (and a Leo!), so I have to say a cat. I grew up with two cats though, so maybe I’m a little biased.

If you could attend the birthday party of anyone (dead or alive), who would it be? Why?
I would have loved to be at Scott’s birthday party that raised the money to found charity: water. I’m sure it was a blast. It would have been amazing to see what it was like when charity: water was just an idea and had to be built from the ground up.

We’re moving into a new office this summer. What cool feature or amenity would you include in the new space?
Nap pods! Google has them, maybe we get get them donated. Sometimes you just need a power nap, you know?

Tell us your best joke.
Two muffins are sitting in an oven. The first muffin says, “Boy, it’s hot in here isn’t it?” The second muffin says, “Whoa! A talking muffin!”

Jeremy Lakin
School or Current Job: NYU
From: Reading, PA

Fun fact about you:
I went to elementary school with Taylor Swift.

What does a typical day in the office look like for you?
I check my emails, update our WASH Library and several other spreadsheets. I work on a longer project for the majority of the afternoon which ranges from Box clean-up to data analysis. Then at some point I usually run to an embassy to pick up or drop off a visa.

What’s your favorite project so far in your internship?
It has either been the time I translated a partner’s proposal into our template because it was so challenging or mapping out our water projects on Google Maps. Both of them allowed me to use cool techniques I’ve learned while interning here.

What’s your favorite thing about working at charity: water?
I love how integral our personal relations are to the work we do. This is my fifth internship, and before this, a senior member of the team has never taken me for coffee to just talk. It also makes coming in to work each day exciting because you look forward to seeing everyone. Beyond the social aspect, everything in Water Programs is a team effort, and it’s incredible to see how building these relationships here translates to building relationships in the field.

What are your hobbies outside of work?
I like rowing, photography, running, walking my sisters’ dog Monkey and baking.

What’s the most adventurous thing you’ve ever done?
When I was 16 I did a study abroad program in Barcelona before I learned a word of Spanish. It was a month long, and I had never been away from home for more than 10 days before.

Tell us about your proudest accomplishment.
I recently won the Senior Excellence Award from my fraternity. It’s given out to 12 seniors annually out of the several thousand that apply. It was just an amazing culmination to all the work I’ve put into this organization over the past four years.

What’s on your NYC bucket list for this spring/summer?
I really want to see a musical or Cedar Lake Ballet company.

What’s your spirit animal? Why?
Elephant. My friends always tell me I’m the mom of our friend group, and elephants have one of the few matriarchal societies. Also because rowing has given me massive legs.

If you could attend the birthday party of anyone (dead or alive), who would it be? Why?
Probably Scott’s. I would get to hang out with everyone from here, and there would definitely be some crazy celebrity appearances.

We’ve moving into a new office this summer. What cool feature or amenity would you include in the new space?
Me.

Beatriz Ariza
School of Current Job: City College of New York
From: New York

Fun fact about you:
I used to be part of a professional performing salsa group.

What does a typical day in the office look like for you?
Check my inbox as soon as I get here. I usually have quite a few emails waiting for me, along with checking to see if any of the gifts I have to send out for that day arrived.

What’s your favorite project so far in your internship?
I consider myself the birthday santa clause for The Well members, so finding a the perfect gift for each one has been challenging but fun.

What’s your favorite thing about working at charity: water?
The environment. To be surrounded by people that truly love what they’re doing and be willing to work hard to make the mission a reality.

What are your hobbies outside of work?
Since I no longer dance, I would say I read a lot. When I have the opportunity to squeeze in a book I do. I am constantly being gifted books that I am still trying to catch up on.

What’s the most adventurous thing you’ve ever done?
Probably something related to food; I’m food adventurous. I’ve eaten a Mexican grasshopper before (do not recommend). As well as tried balut which looks really odd but actually tastes pretty good once you get over the appearance.

Tell us about your proudest accomplishment.
Probably learning how to code on my own and getting into a program that I had wanted. As soon as I heard the news I was telling everybody, even if they didn’t know what I was talking about. I was way too excited.

What’s on your NYC bucket list for this spring/summer?
To be working hopefully in Dhaka for the summer. It’s something that I have been planning for a while but have had to keep putting on hold.

What’s your spirit animal? Why?
A panda! No reason, I just think they are obnoxiously cute.

If you could attend the birthday party of anyone (dead or alive), who would it be? Why?
Drake! I can say Drake right? Or Oprah. I missed an opportunity to hear her speak which I was really upset about. Perhaps an Oprah and Drake birthday.

We’ve moving into a new office this summer. What cool feature or amenity would you include in the new space?
More beanbags! You can never have enough beanbags!

Tell us your best joke.
I’m the type of person that can never finish telling a joke. I am too busy laughing while saying the joke that you never get to actually hear it.

Lisa Thomas
School or Current Job: Office Management Intern/Stand-in & photo double on random TV shows
From: California

Fun fact about you:
Despite being California born and raised, I don’t like sushi, surfing, or kale…….they’re probably going to revoke my California Certificate of Authenticity for saying this.

What does a typical day in the office look like for you?
Every day in the office is different for me.  I help the Office Manager with anything and everything whether it’s keeping things organized, stocked, and looking pretty, preparing a thorough plan for the office move, creating new systems to support the office and staff size, or making LOTS of coffee… and maybe drinking some myself.

What’s your favorite project so far in your internship?
Planning for the move to the new office. There are so many moving parts and initial projects, it constantly keeps me on my toes! Seeing it start to come together and knowing that charity: water will have a beautiful work space at the end of this is a major reward.

What’s your favorite thing about working at charity: water?
Beside the snacks??? The people! The office consists of so many talented people that are the beating heart of this organization.  The passion, integrity, and dedication is contagious.

What are your hobbies outside of work?
I enjoy tasting all of the pizza in New York, trying new brunch spots, and traveling and exploring the East Coast with my husband.

What’s the most adventurous thing you’ve ever done?
River rafting, ziplining through the rainforest in Costa Rica, marriage.

Tell us about your proudest accomplishment.
My proudest accomplishment to date is moving across the country with my husband. We left behind our family, friends, belongings, and jobs in order to take advantage of new opportunities and change career paths. It’s been our biggest challenge and our biggest accomplishment as a team.

What’s on your NYC bucket list for this spring/summer?
Soaking up ALL of the sunshine.  Finding hiking trails upstate.  Checking Canada off of my travel list.  Meeting my soon-to-be newest nephew.

What’s your spirit animal? Why?
My spirit animal is definitely a panda. Yes, because they are adorable, but more so because they are so laid back and playful, just enjoying life and snacking on some bamboo.  I think they’re a great reminder to lighten up, play a little, and enjoy life……and snacks.

If you could attend the birthday party of anyone (dead or alive), who would it be? Why?
I would attend C.S. Lewis’ birthday party.  I’d love to pick his brain about life and faith……and I bet he’d have some pretty amazing people there as guests too.

We’ve moving into a new office this summer. What cool feature or amenity would you include in the new space?
In my dream world I would include a fire pit in the quiet space.  I’d settle for a fire place though…..imagine the s’mores possibilities!!!

Tell us your best joke.
Why can’t you give Elsa a balloon?…… Because she’ll Let it Go!!

Rachel Precious
School or Current Job: Brand ambassador for Leaf & Ardor Tea Company
From: Westport, CT

Fun fact about you:
I was born in Dublin, Ireland

What does a typical day in the office look like for you?
Always starts with a cup of tea, and always with a dollop of honey (I love honey!). Throughout the day I’ll help Jaclyn manage everything from massive amounts of, let’s say… “loosely organized” files.. to booking flights and hotels all over the world. My lunch breaks consist of a walk to the piers and stretching out on a bench soaking up as much sun as possible!

What’s your favorite project so far in your internship?
Organizing all the data and files related to c: w’s major fundraising events, like Charity Ball and Tribute! It’s amazing learning the nitty gritty behind-the-scenes info on what goes into such incredible nights. The work highlights the strengths of some events, and what areas could use improvement, and helps our team gain clarity as we plan future events.

What’s your favorite thing about working at charity: water?
Being surrounded by like-minded people who are working towards solving an issue as immense as the water crisis. c: w brings together a vibrant collection of personalities with a wide array of skills and knowledge, creating a fun and creative work environment where great work is accomplished every single day.

What are your hobbies outside of work?
Massively into yoga, and anything to do with traveling and the outdoors. I LOVE camping: there’s nothing like a good hike with friends, cooking over a fire, throwing back a few beers, and sleeping under the stars. I love to dance, any time, any place – I’m often grooving away in my own little world over here in the Intern Puddle (the name I’ve affectionately given to the tables where us interns work). And bees! I have a beehive at home in CT – come find me if you want to nerd out about bees!

What’s the most adventurous thing you’ve ever done?
Taking off for a year of traveling by myself around Australia. When plans to travel with a buddy fell through, I decided I wouldn’t let the lack of company stop me from having what was sure to be a life changing experience. My adventures included camping in the outback studying small mammal populations for several months; living in my tent on a secluded beach studying humpback whale migration; working on a vineyard for an entire vintage season (who knew driving tractors could be so much fun??); and even becoming a certified seagrass monitor!

Tell us about your proudest accomplishment.
Getting to where I am now, here at c: w. I’ve spent my life as what I would call a “professional volunteer” – I volunteer at any and everything I can get my hands on. Which brought me to c: w! My time volunteering at Tribute was hands down one of the best volunteer experiences I’ve had, and I worked hard to pursue a relationship with charity: water. And now here I am, writing this intern blog post!

What’s on your NYC bucket list for this spring/summer?
I really want to start going to a lot more shows and concerts. Hopefully by this summer I will have moved into the city from CT and will be able to take full advantage of NYC’s amazing arts and cultural scene; I’d love to spend a day in Central Park and check out some of the free concerts – I’d bring a blanket, an unnecessarily large amount of food, and a pile of friends, and we’d have ourselves a grand ol’ time.

What’s your spirit animal? Why?
I’ve always felt a connection with red foxes. They’re very common animals in New England, but they’re rarely seen because they’re timid and active at dawn and dusk. I once hand-raised a group of orphaned fox kits, and they were out of control! So playful and full of personality, and irresistibly fluffy.

If you could attend the birthday party of anyone (dead or alive), who would it be? Why?
Ernest Hemmingway. He and his crew really knew how to throw down! Sitting outside at a Parisian cafe, drinking too much and getting in obnoxious literary and philosophical arguments and causing a scene before a raucous night on the town with fellow writers and artists – sounds like a good time to me!

We’ve moving into a new office this summer. What cool feature or amenity would you include in the new space?
Plants! Lots and LOTS of plants! We need plenty of green in our space. According to my quick Google research: green is often used in decorating for its calming effect, and it’s thought to relieve stress and help heal. Those who have a green work environment experience fewer stomachaches. Green also represents tranquility, good luck, and health. And! Researchers have also found that green can improve reading ability.

Tell us your best joke.
What do you call a cow with no legs?
GROUND BEEF!!! :)

Fun fact about you:
I keep a list of fun facts written down just for questions like these.

What does a typical day in the office look like for you?
Assembling project updates and completion reports for our water project sponsors, the occasional donor research, and keeping our NetSuite records nice and clean. I basically live on spreadsheets.

What’s your favorite project so far in your internship?
Definitely staffing at Tribute last year and getting to know and interact with the major supporters that help charity: water run year-to-year. Some of the people that helped us set up for the event were invited guests themselves, if that tells you anything about their generosity.

What’s your favorite thing about working at charity: water?
That we start the week with bagels and end it with pizza. We’re a well-fed office.

What are your hobbies outside of work?
Sport climbing, photojournalism, collecting bad jokes, making lists of my hobbies, hiking, and more recently, cooking. I’ve been told I make a pretty great pesto.

What’s the most adventurous thing you’ve ever done?
A friend and I hiked a portion of the Appalachian Trail last summer – we hitched a ride to New Hampshire and just headed south. Our packs were way too heavy and I didn’t bring the right kind of pants, but we met some amazing people out there. Our first night camping out, we shared a hut with this couple that’d been on the trail for five months straight. Another guy that we were sharing food with told us how he’d just chased off a bear the day before.

Tell us about your proudest accomplishment.
Freshman year, I was photographing a talent show at NYU when Judah Friedlander showed up to do a short standup set between acts. I’m a big 30 Rock fan, so I continued shooting. I showed him the photos backstage and he ended up using one for a magazine interview a few months later. Pretty cool deal.

What’s on your NYC bucket list for this spring/summer?
1. Getting my thesis done
2. Getting my thesis done
3. Getting my thesis done
4. Hey, have I told you about my thesis?

What’s your spirit animal? Why?
Probably a mountain goat. I’ll eat anything, and I love climbing.

If you could attend the birthday party of anyone (dead or alive), who would it be? Why?
Bill Hader, but only as his SNL character Stefon. Stefon would throw such a mean birthday party. It would have everything.

We’ve moving into a new office this summer. What cool feature or amenity would you include in the new space?
A bouldering wall, because a gym would be boring. Or maybe a plant nursery, where you could grow some tomatoes in your spare time. We could compost!

Tell us your best joke.
- Knock knock.
- Who’s there?
- To.
- To who?
- To whom.

It would probably be Bill Murray’s birthday party. I would imagine that it’s an entertaining and fun party given the snippets I’ve read about him.

Numerous décor that helps convey the setting, theme, or vibe that charity: water wants to portray would be cool.
