Brighton Love Water
Campaign Update: August 2011

In 2008, Brighton and charity: water partnered on a campaign to fundraise for water projects in Kenya. We were humbled by the efforts of Brighton employees, customers, vendors and other supporters who together raised and donated $741,134 that funded 29 water projects and brought clean water to thousands of Kenyans.

charity: water is dedicated to implementing sustainable water projects and remaining transparent about the challenges we face along the way. In 2011, we traveled to the field to visit the 29 completed projects in person. We learned that nine of the projects had functional issues that needed attention. Four of the sites had hardware malfunctions, which were quickly fixed and returned to working order. The other five sites had water quality or taste issues so our partner is currently exploring reverse osmosis and other filtration techniques to render the water potable.

charity: water was inspired by the Brighton community and our supporters raised an additional $500,000 to build water projects at schools in Kenya. In August 2011, we invested the remaining Brighton Love Water funds in the International Rescue Committee to serve 10 more schools in Northern Kenya. Through this program, we will provide access to clean and safe drinking water for more than 5,000 students.

Water for the Hospitals.
Each health clinic serves up to 200 patients per day. Water is piped into each hospital ward and room - providing water for surgery, labor and delivery, sanitation equipment and linens. By implementing deep boreholes, each clinic’s water system now yields enough water to serve the clinic as well as the surrounding community.
Water for Schools.
Each water project serves the school along with the community, reaching hundreds of students and thousands of residents. Water is pumped from the well to a water tank in the school over a cement kiosk. Like the kiosks at clinics, an employee collects user fees from the community which are used to ensure there is petrol for the pump and enough income to pay for maintenance and repairs.
