Bindhu Pamarthi
raising money for a well in Malawi

Hi! I am Bindhu Pamarthi, an 18 year old freshman at UNC Chapel Hill and I’m on a mission to save 1.1 billion people around the world without potable water, one well at a time.

Living in a country where the feeling of thirst lasts at most a few minutes, it is hard to grasp the concept that one person in every six around the globe does not have access to clean water. I am raising money for a well in Malawi for a few reasons, the first being the obvious, that the people there need one. Currently, the state that I live in is in a drought. Still many people continue to use water without consideration or any sense of value. A drought in America is a little different from a drought in developing countries. For one, when we are in a drought, we still have running water. If we all took a second to open our eyes a little wider to take notice of quite how blessed some of us are, maybe it would make us reevaluate our profligate practices and demonstrate more compassion to the less fortunate. It seems logical to me that if one person has the means to help another defenseless population of people (who clearly were not born “equal”) with little consequence to the giver, why not extend a helping hand? Besides, I feel global water crises are my calling. Not many know this but my full name, Himabindhu, means a Himalayan dew drop. With a name like that who wouldn’t say that my passion for water, conserving it and making it available to those most in need, is anything but innate? This year, I am determined to funnel all my energy into raising the $1,500 needed for the well in Malawi . Giving clean water is like giving life. Nothing could be more fulfilling to me or could make me happier than if you contributed to this fund. As for the people that know me well enough, know that the best gift you could give me on my birthday and any other “gift giving occasion” would be a donation to my project fund.

Donate towards Bindhu's well:   What happens after a well is built?

100% of your donation will directly build freshwater wells and basic sanitation projects in Malawi.

After a well is installed, charity: water partners will work directly with villagers, teaching them how to maintain and fix their well and hand pump device, while also conducting basic hygiene and sanitation classes.

$20 can give a person clean, safe drinking water for 20 years.

Why $20?

An average hand-dug well costs $5,000 and can serve a community of 400 people.
The price of a well varies by region, the depth at which water can be reached, and also depends on cement, transportation and material costs.

Why 20 years?
20 years is the average lifespan of a hand pump, given that it is routinely maintained. When a hand pump breaks, often the repair costs significantly less, and the well can resume full functionality. charity: water funds well rehabilitations as well as new drilled and hand dug wells. learn more about charity: water projects >
