| DAN ALTENBURG - BIKING FOR WATER | $7,300 raised so far! | ||||
My name is Dan Altenburg. I quit my job a while back to try some new things. Starting April 25th, my next adventure begins. I intend to pedal my way on a bike from St. Augustine (near Jacksonville), Florida to the Pacific Ocean at San Diego, California.I wanted to make the bike ride more significant than just Dan on a bike for 2,300+ miles. That is why I decided to raise funds for charity: water, who installs and maintains drinking water wells in the world’s poorest developing nations. “I’m not into charities…” , you say. In fact, I’ve said that myself in the past. This charity is different. Many of you who have found your way to this page know me already. Others perhaps, do not. There are some interesting parallels between this charity organization and who I am: * charity: water provides help to the poorest of the 1.1 billion people in the world who don’t have access to clean drinking water. Although I will dip my bike tires in the Atlantic Ocean (5.7 trillion gallons of seawater) at the start of my ride, and the Pacific Ocean (187 quintillion gallons of seawater) at the end of my ride, without proper treatment, this water isn’t fit for drinking. * A single well funded by charity: water provides water for 400 people and lasts for 20 years. On my ride, I will drink no less than 120 gallons of water over the 2,300 miles and expect to finish in about 54 days. * With financial support from people like you, charity: water installed water wells to provide clean drinking water to over 100,000 people in several African countries. In a past job, I installed water wells in several US states to monitor groundwater contaminated by lifestyles filled with luxuries (gasoline, dry cleaning solvents, etc). Can I ask you to support my bike ride from Florida to California? You don’t need to put up with the pain of a narrow bicycle seat, struggle to sleep in a mosquito-filled tent, or sizzle on the sun-soaked Texas asphalt. Simply make a donation to charity: water! I’d like to raise $23,780 - $10 per mile of the bike ride – enough money to bring clean water to 2,500 people in need. 100% of the funds I raise will go towards the construction of 4 clean water systems in Uganda. Please know I am paying all of my own expenses on this ride. In return for your generosity, please check in at http://danbikeride.blogspot.com or http://www.crazyguyonabike.com/doc/dansbikeride for updates about my trip or just to say hello. Thank you for your help. |
