charity: water news and upcoming events.
There's been a lot going on at charity: water lately. Thanks to your help, we're about to break the $10 million mark and have now funded 1,341 projects serving 741,000 people in 14 countries. We've still got our sights set on the one billion people without clean water, and won't stop until everyone on earth has access to this basic human right. Here's what's going on this month, and how you can help.
charity: water and Saks Fifth Avenue.
Saks Fifth Avenue has partnered with charity: water again to bring clean, safe drinking water to communities in need. If you pass by Saks Fifth Avenue in Manhattan in the next couple of weeks, you'll see three of their stunning window displays filled with our Jerry Cans and photos. Last year, Saks raised more than $540,000 and funded over 100 wells in 3 countries. This year, they're offering a new t-shirt in more than 100 stores, 100% of profits will build wells. You can buy the t-shirt online and learn more about the projects they've funded at charitywater.org/saks
mother's day e-cards.
Make mom proud. Honor her this year by sending a charity: water e-card. One $20 e-card can give one person clean water for the next 20 years. She'll also be able to choose the country where the money is used and learn more about our work. Giving flowers is great. Giving life is better. Get your card now at charitywater.org/mothersday
Hugh Jackman donates $50,000 via Twitter.
The star of the current blockbuster "Wolverine" used Twitter last month to announce he'd donate $100,000 to any individual's charity if they could convince him in 140 characters or less. We were in Ethiopia when we heard this, and immediately found a school in need of clean water. We took photos of the kids and sent them straight to @realhughjackman (Hugh's twitter name) on Twitter. On April 24th, our staff gathered around a computer in the office as Hugh announced the winners live on Ryan Seacrest's national radio show. He said he decided to split the donation between two charities: charity: water and Operation of Hope. We were thrilled, and will use the money to fund 10 wells in Ethiopia. We're also thrilled for Operation of Hope, an incredible organization providing facial surgery to victims of land mines. Check out the story and listen to Hugh's interview on Ryan Seacrest's website. Thanks to all who tweeted him and brought even more attention to the global water crisis.
The first Twestival well is complete.
On 12 February 2009, 200+ international cities hosted a Twestival (Twitter + festival) to bring people together to raise awareness and money for charity: water. In less than one month, we were already on the ground in Ethiopia drilling the first Twestival well. Proving it again, we filmed the drilling and immediately broadcast it via satellite to donors in 202 cities. If you haven't seen the videos yet, see where your money went at charitywater.org/twestival. If you're on Twitter, follow us @charitywater
Webby Nomination (Best of the Web)
When we launched the september campaign last fall, many of you sacrificed your birthdays to raise money to give clean water. Not only did the campaign raise over $1 million, the website was also nominated for a Webby Award for the best charitable website. Check out our microsite that is getting all the buzz at borninseptember.org
Secret Mission in NYC
We're looking for 200 volunteers to help with a top-secret mission the morning of May 19th. All we can tell you is it will involve a lot of yellow Jerry Cans and some serious media attention. And we need your help. Join us as we continue to tell the world that "clean water changes everything." Email our volunteer coordinator Nicky Yates, nicky.yates@charitywater.org for more information.
Fuerza Bruta
It's hard to describe an experience watching a performance of Fuerza Bruta in their theater near Union Square. One thing is for sure: it is incredibly fun. And loud. But most importantly, at the end of each performance, the entire cast comes out and leverages their use of water in their show to raise money for charity: water. To date, they've raised more than $40k. As always, 100% of the money raised is going directly to freshwater projects. Learn more at fuerzabrutanyc.com
Chelsea Market Exhibit
There's only one month left to see the charity: water exhibit at Chelsea Market. We've already collected thousands of dollars of change from the wishing well, on top of the $30,000 that was raised opening night. If you can't make it in person, view the exhibition online at charitywater.org/chelseamarket
