charity: water's goal is to not only provide clean and safe water to those in need, but to do so through
long-lasting projects implemented by excellent local partners in the countries where they work.
Our partners on the ground have spent years researching the terrain, learning and perfecting the skills of project building and integrating their work in the local culture. charity: water relies on their experience and knowledge to ensure holistic water programs.
We choose to work with partners who already have a track record of exceptional work. charity: water's purpose is to expand their outreach and scope by providing additional funding and support for their programs. Our partners have been in the area for years; they know the language and customs of the people; and they have mastered the terrain and logistical challenges of working there. They know the in-depth water issues facing the communities, which approaches to hygiene and sanitation work best, and what water development techniques are suitable for their specific region.
The main focus of charity: water is to spread awareness and create accountability when it comes to our donors. We find and bring back stories of communities in need, and of the amazing work being done on the ground. We then work to raise money so that work can continue and double, often triple in volume. We try and give a voice to the poor, bringing back their stories to the people here who have the ability to help. We then provide a direct way people can give, ensuring that 100% of the money reaches those in need.

charity: water funds water projects in 20 developing countries around the world. We choose countries based on their very limited access to a safe water supply, high rates of water-related deaths and whether we have exemplary local partners on the ground who can implement the projects.
After working with our partners to find the best technologies, locations and budgets for each water program, we use 100% of donations to directly fund water project construction and implementation. Our partners agree to use this money for direct project costs, separate from their administrative needs; this means 100% of your donation is used to purchase materials, build the projects and provide training for the local community to maintain the project. Water projects take about 18 months to complete. At that point, our partners submit GPS coordinates and photos to us and we prove each project publicly on Google Maps.
We also send charity: water staff and photographers to monitor the projects and bring back photos and stories of the communities you've helped.
We select our partner organizations carefully based on a wide range of criteria. When we choose a partner, we ensure that their staff include water experts, strong accountants, auditors and program evaluators to implement the water projects we fund on the ground.
Many of our partner organizations have objectives that are broader than the work that they do with charity: water. In addition to providing clean water, some also provide health care, build schools or work with religious groups. When we spend your money on the ground, we ensure that every dollar funds only the costs of building water projects and doesn't go to the promotion of religious activities. We believe that everyone on the planet deserves access to clean water regardless of their ethnicity, background or religious belief, and we have strong financial and program controls in place to make sure that 100% of our donors' funds are used only for that purpose.
