Concern Worldwide US in Uganda
Concern has been working in Uganda since 1990, providing humanitarian assistance to a population that has endured years of violent conflict. Millions of people have been uprooted from their homes and now survive in sprawling camps with little access to clean water and proper sanitation facilities.
The goal of Concern's 2007 water and sanitation project in Uganda is to improve water, sanitation, and hygiene conditions for 75,028 displaced people living in camps in the district of Pader. The project will establish reliable, clean water systems, enhance knowledge of sanitation and hygiene, empower the population to maintain their water system, and improve quality of life by reducing the amount of time women and children have to spend collecting water. The program aims to increase the supply of safe drinking water from 7 liters per person per day to 15 liters per day, and to improve access to latrines so that communities will have 1 latrine per 50 people instead of 1 latrine per 150. Concern's work will bring water - and hope - to thousands.
