HEALING HANDS INTERNATIONAL
![]()
Founded in 1994, Healing Hands International (HHI) is a Christian organization working to reduce human suffering in 66 countries. Their various programs target all the effects that poverty has on quality of life and include sending gift boxes to impoverished children, disaster response, medical care, agriculture, food aid, education and the development of freshwater wells to provide safe drinking water.
HHI in Ethiopia: An average well in Ethiopia costs $3,500 and can provide safe drinking water for up to 20 years, but conditions in Ethiopia make drilling difficult. Paralyzing rainy seasons, low water tables, poor roadways, and expensive equipment are just a few of the reasons that make safe water sources so hard to come by. UNICEF determined that the southern region of Dilagumba alone would need 100,000 wells to provide a sufficient amount of water for the population, a daunting number. In 2003 HHI developed Project Pure to provide safe drinking water for the people of Ethiopia. In the three projects that have been completed over the last four years, HHI has dug 150 wells providing safe water for hundreds of thousands of people. Because of their previous success, the Ethiopian government has invited HHI to continue their work in the country, and in 2007 HHI hopes to dig 60 more wells. When completed, the 210 wells dug by HHI will provide 700,000 Ethiopians with a safe, reliable source of drinking water, and an improved quality of life.
