WATER FOR PEOPLE

Water For People was established in 1991 by a group of professionals from the American Water Works Association with the goal of improving the quality of life for people in developing nations through the development of locally sustainable drinking water resources, sanitation facilities, and health and hygiene education programs. Currently, Water For People is working in five countries around the world - Bolivia, Guatemala, Honduras, Malawi, and India - and plans to double the number of countries to which they provide aid by 2011.

Water For People in Malawi:

Since 2000, WFP has been operating in Malawi on projects that include digging new wells, as well as the formation of supplies 125 with water for living. When completed, the project will provide each of the beneficiaries with 29 liters of water per day. In 2005, Water For People helped provide a safe, sustainable drinking water supply to 68,454 impoverished people worldwide and helped provide basic sanitation facilities to 42,309 people.

Along with their local partners, Water For People is helping provide safe water for 24,570 people in Malawi in 2006 alone In 2007, Water For People plans to provide safe water to 4,340 people and sanitation to 8,680 people of the Chikwawa district of Malawi. Access to water will be provided through the construction of 17 boreholes and standpipes. One borehole costs about $4,000 and provides 250 people with water for washing, cooking and drinking, while one standpipe supplies 125 with water for living. When completed, the project will provide each of the benfaciaries with 29 liters of water per day.
