A Better World by 2030

On September 25th, the United Nations launched the new #GlobalGoals in an effort to end extreme poverty and tackle climate change by 2030.

It’s the second set of goals the United Nations has set for the world. The first goals were set at the turn of the century in the year 2000 and were called the Millennium Development Goals (MDG’s). These new Global Goals are meant to build on the progress of the last 15 years and finish what’s been started.

Although the world hasn’t fully eradicated extreme poverty, given every person access to clean drinking water, or achieved gender equality yet, we have certainly made remarkable progress.

In the year 2000, 28% of the world was living in extreme poverty (defined as living on less than $1.25 a day) and today in 2015, that number has been cut in half. When charity: water started working on the water crisis in 2006, the number of people living without clean water was just over 1 billion. Today, that number is 663 million. This gives us great hope. The world is getting better.

But the job isn’t done, and the UN isn’t stopping halfway.

Over the last three years, 193 world leaders got together and decided on the new goals so they can finish the job. From clean energy and zero poverty to education for all, clean water and sanitation. Finally, the 17 new Global Goals are finalized and ready to be shared with the world.

The next 15 years will be definitive for the human race, but before the world gets to work, we must let everyone on the planet — all 7.4 billion people — know that these goals exist because they affect every single one of us, and it is our job as global citizens to keep our world leaders accountable.

Read up on the goals here and help spread the word. The United Nation’s success is our success, and the best thing we can do is let the whole world know. These goals are as much our responsibility as they are the presidents’.

It’s possible to put an end to extreme poverty by 2030. Get involved and share these #globalgoals with everyone you know.
