A few hours ago, water came shooting out of the ground from 184 feet deep at the Abenea school in northern Ethiopia. More than 2,000 people looked on and cheered, knowing their kids would soon have a very different future.

Please take 2 minutes and watch the drilling video.

Thanks to your support of the campaign, we started drilling here this morning. We'll continue posting daily videos via satellite until the well is finished and we can't wait to show you what your money can do.

There are many more communities and schools like this that need our help here in Ethiopia. Please give $33 and help us reach our goal of 333 wells.

X MARKS THE SPOT. THE DRILL SITE AT ABENEA. | posted on 08.29.08 from NYC

It may not look like it yet, but this rock marks the site
of the new well at Abenea.
Abenea school wasn't on the list of 33 villages we recently visited and documented for the September campaign. In fact, none of the schools we saw were. But while in a nearby village, were were told we had to visit Abenea. "There's no water," the people said. "Please help."

What we found disturbed us.

We couldn't imagine a school that large not having water. And then we saw something we'd never seen before. One by one, the teachers brought us 10 students with horrible skin diseases and rashes. We promised to send doctors. We weren't sure the skin problems were because of the water, but after hearing that kids here washed only once a month because of the shortage, we thought they must be linked.

The solution for Abenea's water problem isn't a simple $4,000 hand-dug well. The groundwater is much deeper, and the deep well and 16 bathrooms needed will cost $28,000. I'll spend my Labor Day weekend writing to ask many of you for donations personally, then leave for Ethiopia on Monday.
