Showing donations over 0.0005 BTC.
If we liquidated the trust today, we could bring clean and safe drinking water to approximately 41,463 people. But we believe this fund will have an even greater impact over time. Here’s how it’ll work.
We can’t hold any other cryptocurrencies in the trust at the moment, but you can donate them directly here.
Ideally, this allows the trust to appreciate in value.
All donated coins will be used to fund clean water projects.
Gemini founders Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss have personally matched the first 50 BTC received by the trust.
The water crisis is huge, and like you, we know we’re playing the long game. But we believe today’s generosity can radically change the future.
Want to put your coins to work now? Bypass the trust and we’ll convert your crypto immediately.
Like past cryptocurrency donations, your gift will be immediately converted and put toward clean water projects. Direct donations will not be added to the Bitcoin Water Trust.
Donate directlyThe Bitcoin Water Trust is a cryptocurrency fund that will accept and hold bitcoin donations to charity: water until at least January 1, 2025. After January 1, 2025, we will use commercially reasonable best efforts to keep bitcoin as bitcoin before converting to fiat currency. The donations will be used to fund clean water projects around the world.
For now, the Bitcoin Water Trust only accepts BTC. If you would like to donate with another cryptocurrency, you can donate directly here. Direct donations will be converted into fiat and used to fund clean water projects for communities with immediate needs.
Absolutely. However, tax receipts can only be prepared for donors who provide an email address.
If you’re looking for a tax receipt, but don’t want to be named on the leaderboard, simply choose “Donate With Tax Receipt” and use a pseudonym. Your pseudonym will appear in place of your real name on the leaderboard, and we’ll deliver your tax receipt via email.
The simple answer is yes—in most cases. Our team will prepare tax receipts for any donor who provides an email address. If you donate anonymously, we will not be able to provide you with a tax receipt.
More specifically, all crypto donations are made to our US-registered charity. Charity Global, Inc. is a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization in the USA and a registered public benefit organization (ANBI) in The Netherlands. US and Dutch donors are able to take tax deductions for donations to Charity Global, Inc. to the extent permitted by law. Donors based outside the US and The Netherlands should consult with a qualified advisor regarding the tax or equivalent rules covering deductibility in their applicable non-US jurisdiction.
Please consult with your tax advisor to determine whether your donation is tax-deductible in whole or in part. Nothing in this communication is intended to constitute legal or tax advice.
Ideally, no. We intend to keep all Bitcoin Water Trust donations as BTC when we begin using the fund to construct water projects in 2025 and beyond. However, if a local partner cannot accept Bitcoin, we will convert to fiat.
We will not be able to refund bitcoin donations. Please take care before initiating your donation.
Bitcoin transfers can take anywhere from ten minutes to a few hours. As soon as we confirm your donation, you’ll be added to the leaderboard. While every donation makes a difference, the leaderboard has a 0.0005 BTC minimum.
We hope that your donation will appreciate in value over time and help us fund clean water for even more people around the world. We chose 2025 to allow for a full cycle to pass.
We’ve initially partnered with Gemini to hold Bitcoin Water Trust donations in a secure cold storage wallet. As the fund grows, we intend to diversify our custodians for security purposes. No matter what, we will take every precaution to protect the security of your donation and the integrity of the Bitcoin Water Trust.
Net of any transaction fees, we will use 100% of your remaining BTC donation to fund clean water projects.
While you won’t be able to choose a specific country or community to serve, our experienced water programs team will work closely with local partners to determine where your donation will have the most impact. We currently have active water programs across 21 countries, and you can learn more about how charity: water chooses partners and allocates funds here.
Yes, you can donate crypto for immediate use here. By donating directly, you will bypass the Bitcoin Water Trust, and we will convert your gift to fiat. 100% will be used to fund clean water projects unless otherwise specified.
We expect the average cost to bring someone access to clean water in 2025 will be approximately 0.0025 BTC, while the average cost to bring an entire community clean water will be approximately 0.7995 BTC. The actual cost will also vary depending on the country in which we are working, the solutions we are implementing, inflation, and other factors.
771 million people in the world currently live without access to clean and safe drinking water. charity: water has been working to end the water crisis alongside local partners and generous supporters since 2006, raising $550M with a community of donors from 150 countries, and funding projects that will serve 12.7M people across 29 countries. You can learn more about our work and why we believe everyone should have access to clean water here.
Yes, we accepted our first bitcoin in 2014 and 569 BTC total before the inception of the Bitcoin Water Trust. Historically, direct crypto donations were immediately converted to fiat and used for clean water projects. If requested, donations were occasionally used to pay for operational costs.
From the ink in our printers to our staff salaries, all of charity: water’s operational costs are covered by a generous group of 125 donors known as The Well.
