Why Kevin Valera is fundraising for clean water

Every day, 5,000 kids under the age of 5 die from water-related illnesses. We are going to help change that!

In my family, the holidays have long been known as a time for celebration and love. It’s also a time when we go overboard spending money on each other. Americans spend around $500 billion on gifts each holiday season. That's enough to give more than $70 to each living person on Earth. I want to give to those that are truly in need. I want to give more than gifts that fit in neatly wrapped boxes.

I want to give people life.

Eleven percent of all living people are living without clean water. Right now, around the globe, there are 800 million people whose only available drinking water comes from sources we would be afraid to touch. My mission is not to guilt you or to harass you, but to inform you. I know that I can rely on the kindness of my friends, family, and all those I reach, to give a small fraction of the population the gift of clean water.

We're all struggling to pay our bills and make ends meet, but if we put a little effort into it, we'll hardly miss what we save. A lot of us each have 100, 150, and often more than 200 friends/followers on various social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, Google+, etc. If just 100 of all of those people give as much as $5 to my Charity:Water campaign, I will reach my $500 goal. That might not seem like a lot, but $500 will guarantee that at least 25 people in an underdeveloped community will receive the gift of clean water. The internet is full of tips on how to save a few dollars to help us save a few lives. Whether it's $1 or $100, every penny we donate will go directly to Charity:Water water projects. Private donors cover the staff salaries and the operating costs so that we don't have to. When the projects are complete, Charity:Water will send us GPS coordinates, photos and other details about the communities we've helped.

My previous two campaigns were not incredibly successful, but we did manage to provide something. This time I know we can do better. We've got between now and March 19th, so who's with me? Your support would mean the world to me. Thanks.
