Why Liza Howland is fundraising for clean water

I don't think we realize how blessed we are to live the life we live....

I get up around 7:20 on a rainy, Monday morning, brush my teeth, wash my face, get dress in my clean clothes, have breakfast, and set out on my five minute walk to school in the rain with my sister (we're both slightly frustrated my dad didn't cave in and drive us).

Across the globe, there is another girl my age, she wakes up a little before day break and sets out on a five mile walk for murky, germ infested water, alone (she has lost her brother and sister to disease-disease that mostly likely came from the water she is going to get). This water is what her surviving family will use to brush their teeth, wash themselves and their clothes, and cook their meals. When she returns home from the watering hole she has to begin her daily chores, education has never crossed her mind.

I'm giving up my sixteenth birthday, because I can. I have everything I need. Giving up my birthday provides the foundation for people across the globe to have what they need and that starts with water. An act as simple as brushing your teeth is a struggle for some people because they just don't have access. I'm asking for a donation of $16 or more to help provide access, help me build a well.

Together, Look what we can do!!!!

The walk for water that used to take everyone three hours, now takes 15 minutes. And the water is safe to drink.

A hygiene worker teaches a village the importance of sanitation. The community builds latrines and sets up handwashing stations.

A man/woman joins the Water Committee to oversee your village's new water source (as a woman, this is your first local leadership position).

They use the extra time and new water source to start a vegetable garden and feed their family. They sell your extra food at the market.

Their kids spend more time in school instead of walking for water. They graduate to become teachers, hygiene workers or business owners.

A nearby village learns how water transformed your community. They petition for a well in their village, and the cycle starts again.
