Running with purpose. Giving with gratitude. Sharing God’s love—one mile, one gift, and one life-changing drop of clean water at a time.
Water is something many of us rarely have to think about. We turn on a faucet, fill a glass, or grab a bottle and simply trust that the water is clean and safe. On a recent visit to Switzerland, we were struck by the fountains throughout Zurich, where people casually stop to fill their water bottles with fresh, clean water. It was such a simple thing, yet it reminded us what an incredible privilege it is to have clean water so readily available. For millions of people around the world, that simple act is not possible. Families walk long distances for water, and too often the water they find is not safe to drink.
As a marathon runner, I know just how essential water is. During 26.2 miles, I depend on water being there—at aid stations along the course, at the finish line, and afterward as my body recovers. I never have to wonder whether that water is clean or safe. I simply reach for a cup and drink. Yet for millions of people, finding safe water isn’t a matter of getting through a marathon—it is part of everyday life. That contrast has given every mile of this journey an even greater purpose.
As I take on the Great World Race—running seven marathons on seven continents in seven days—I want every mile to stand for something bigger than the finish line. I am running to support charity: water and their mission to bring clean and safe water to people who don’t have it. Something as basic as clean water can change a life, a family, and an entire community.
My hope is that together, we can turn these miles into something lasting. I may be running the marathons, but every person who gives becomes part of the journey. Whether you give in honor of a mile, a marathon, or simply because you believe everyone deserves access to clean water, your contribution can help bring health, opportunity, dignity, and hope to communities around the world.
Good luck on this massive undertaking. I wish you well. Thank you for tying it to such a valuable charity.
