We are fortunate. We are Americans. We were born in one of the most privileged countries on Earth. While life in the U.S. is far from perfect, there are many things we take for granted.
Like water.
Water sustains life. Clean water helps communities thrive. To some people, almost 800 million, clean water just isn't readily available.
People are dying right now because of a lack of clean water where they live. They didn't have a choice to be born in that corner of the world. By just the location of our birth, a circumstance out of our control, we are separated culturally. But their struggles could have very well been our own. Or our children's.
I imagine what life would be like for my child had she been born somewhere else. She may be malnourished, ill. She may have to walk several miles a day to transport risky water back to her village that in all likelihood will make her more sick. If she is lucky enough to go to school, she will probably be absent often because the water she is drinking is giving her diarrhea. How embarrassing is that for a young child?
Imagining this fate for my daughter makes me cringe. But this is reality for millions of people. And it could have been any of us.
