I'm the Dad part of our extended family A Drop in the Bucket team campaign to raise $1.000 to provide 33 people with fresh water. My father used to send letters from DavidtheDad to Jonthethon (his word play on Jonathan and Jon the Son). For a long time now, I've been Jonathan the Dad.
My personal goal is to raise $250 of our $1000 goal.
As you can see in my photo, I am surrounded by fresh water. When I'm not busy as the pastor of Greensky Hill Indian Mission UMC, I am the lead pastor/officiant for Charlevoix Wedding Pastor. This photo was captured by Paul Retherford just after I pronounced Kelsey and Brent a married couple on the Observation Deck, Bay Harbor, Michigan. We were literally enveloped by Lake Michigan.
It was my recent trip to stand with Water Protectors at Standing Rock that inspired our campaign. Thinking about the immeasurable value of water, I was looking for a way to do something practical that can make a life-changing difference for others and I learned about charity: water.org.
When I told my wife, Kathy, the stories I heard from charity: water.org, we wept together (sad tears for the global need and happy tears for being able to really help) and we decided together to change the focus of our annual St. Nicholas Day family gathering. We gave smaller gifts than planned to each of our five children and their families and we invited them to create this campaign with us. They agreed!
As we say at Greensky Hill, "Chi Miigwech!" (Ojibwe for Big Thanks).
Day 1 without coffee. Only 106 days to go! I'm fine, really. It's such a small sacrifice to get water to thirsty people. In case you missed it, I gave up coffee during our A Drop in the Bucket campaign to raise $10,000 so that 333 people can have safe, accessible, water. I'm asking friends and friends of friends to help by donating any amount that works for you. Why coffee? Because I realized that's where most of my personal water consumption happens and I wanted to be reminded everyday that neighbors go without water.
Here's why: https://www.charitywater.org/whywater/
I know how much you love your coffeee!
I'm kicking off my "give up coffee for water" part of our A Drop in the Bucket campaign with just a little more than my age in dollars. I noticed that a lot of charity: water donors give their birthday amount. I just turned 58, but I'm rounding up to $60 because every $30 gift provides water for one person.
