Here's why I'm so passionate about Charity Water:

Stick with me here...On a trip in Peru my husband and I were stranded at a train station waiting to go back to our hotel. We ran into an Australian man who was on vacation from his day job, a small relief agency that worked in a remote part of Africa. They helped treat people infected with guinea worms. This parasite lives in dirty water and is ingested by those who drink it. Brace yourself for this part...in an effort to break the skin the worms exit human body through pores, most commonly in the legs. It causes a painful stinging sensation, which people look to water to get relief from, further infecting the situation. The cycle of this process is disheartening to say the least.

In 2017 I listened to a podcast talking about how clean water changes everything. A few examples of what it explained is that clean water provides life saving health and hygiene to communities, like the one described above. It also saves women and children millions of hours spent (globally) walking to unsafe watering holes. This time saving empowers them to invest their time in school, learning and business ventures. It solves so many economic and health issues in one fail swoop.

As an American I have no concept of what it's like to live without access to clean water within multiple rooms of my own home. I've been following Charity Water for over 5 years. They use a unique model that allows for 100% of their proceeds go to clean water projects. They update you monthly with newsletters and updates about their projects and the lives of those you're impacting. No other e-mail has ever made me happy cry quite like theirs do. I'm so thankful for the work they do and that I get to be a small part of their movement around the globe.
