Why Stephen Smith is fundraising for clean water

Over Christmas break, I was digging though a box of my old stuff. It was full of legos, remote controlled robots, and a bunch of other toys from my childhood. In my closet, there is a box of nothing but video games that I haven't played in years. Every year, my family asks me what I want for my birthday, and every year I get stuff that ends up in a box sooner or later.

But not this year.

This year I am giving my birthday to Charity: Water. What that means is that instead of gifts, I'm asking you guys to give $20 to this organization.

I just can't stand the fact that every day, 4,500 children die every day. Not from cancer, not from drunk driving, and not from any other dangerous thing that we all know about. But they die because they can't get clean water.

One child every twenty seconds dies because they can't drink clean water.

The water they have, the water walk miles to get, is so full of bacteria that they will always be sick. And what can they do? Not drink it? It is all they have.

Just think: a new video game might cost $50, but do you know what only $20 can do? It can save a life. It can provide one person clean drinking water for twenty years. Clean water is priceless for them, and for us, it is so easy to give.

The idea is for every one who visits this site to give $20. My goal is to reach $2,000. Am I crazy to think so? Maybe I am. But who knows? We might get there, and if we do, one hundred people will be able to drink clean water. Now that is something to celebrate.
