I just finished attending the RSA security conference in San Francisco and was very moved by one of the keynotes presented there. Please take the time to watch the above video and see if you feel the same way.

I'm usually pretty skeptical of donating to charities, but after listening to the above talk and doing a little research, I believe strongly that any funds donated here will have a profound and lasting impact.

There are three things that I don't like about most charities...
1) Most charities tend to focus on "feel good" short term actions applied against chronic problems. Examples include the feed the hungry campaigns that provide a meal at Thanksgiving or other holiday. A single meal does not solve the hunger issue.
2) Most charities tend to manipulate people into donating by showing starving children or abused pets and then playing some soulful music to get people to pledge money.
3) Most charities seem to me to be run very inefficiently, have high overhead expenses, and make poor use of modern technology to connect the people donating with the cause they are supporting.

"Charity: Water" addresses all three of the above issues in a very direct manner that makes a lot of sense to me and is therefore something I feel very good about supporting.

Supplying clean water is a long term solution to a whole host of issues faced by 800 million people around the world. Having easy access to abundant clean water is at the very foundation of health and human dignity, and opens the door for people to flourish and live up to their life's potential, whatever that may be.
