Why Jayina Chan is fundraising for clean water

You have access to clean water. They don't. Let's change that.

Hello.

I am turning 26 this year. And like back in 2010 and 2012, I am embarking on a new charity: water project yet again. This year, the goal is simple--USD$1500. The past two campaigns have had its funds contributed towards serving the Gouma Nazareth Community, Central African Republic and Grat Hafafito Community in Ethiopia. Charity: water gives constant reports and updates to me via emails and my heart sings every single time I see that my efforts are going to people who need them. I don’t want gifts or birthday treats I don’t need. I just want to give.

There are many ways we can give back to society, and I’ve ever been asked, “Why does your charity not start from home?” We have to recognise that we are constantly blessed in so many different ways without ever having to worry about the littlest and simplest things like getting food, a roof over our heads, or even water. Water is undeniably the stem of all important things we require in life; to drink, to clean, to cook. Water affects everything. We have the cleanest water running through our taps and yet we waste it every single time we turn it on, thinking not of people who haven’t got one clean drop. And that, is why.

More people die from the lack of sanitation and safe drinking water every year than from all forms of violence including war. Children less than five years old make up 90% of 30,000 deaths occurred every week because their little vulnerable bodies cannot fight the diseases from dirty water. We don’t touch food that has been dropped on the floor for fear of e-coli, and they drink it. Stats and figures from WHO. Filthy water cannot be washed. -- West African Proverb

Women and young girls walk miles for hours every day to collect water from the nearest source. They are harassed and sexually assaulted, and the time spent walking could have been used learning, working and taking care of their families. And the water collected isn't even clean.

If you could tomorrow morning make water clean in the world, you would have done, in one fell swoop, the best thing you could have done for improving human health by improving environmental quality. -- Elliot A. Norse, in R. J. Hoage, ed., Animal Extinctions, 1985

I feel very strongly for this cause. Please help me, help them.

May peace be upon you.

Wishing you many happy returns,
J.
