Why Cardboard Shell is fundraising for clean water

1 Billion People in this world don't have access to clean drinking water... and we can fix that in ONE YEAR.

One Billion People Without Clean Water. That's 1 out of every 7 people on the planet. That's over three times the population of America.

That's too many.

THE PROBLEM:

Unsafe water and a lack of basic sanitation cause 80% of all disease and kill more people than all forms of violence, including war.

In ONE YEAR, Women and children in Africa will walk for 40 billion hours to and from the nearest water source, which is unprotected and likely to make them sick.

In ONE YEAR, 220, 000 people will die from unsafe water and unhygienic living conditions. 90% of those will be children under 5 years old.

THE SOLUTION:

According to the World Bank, the total cost to achieve universal coverage -- to get clean drinking water for EVERYONE-- is somewhere between $9 Billion and $30 Billion. Let's just assume it's on the high end. $30 Billion. Wow.

Overwhelming? Maybe not so much. Think about these statistics:

LAST YEAR, Americans spent:

* $100 Billion on Their Hair
* $20 Billion on Sports Gambling
* $25.3 Billion on Video Games (
* $5 Billion on Halloween (over $2 Billion in candy alone)
* $110 Billion on Fast Food
* $66 Billion on Soda

... and get this...

* $60 Billion on Losing Weight

Wait. So that means...

If each American gave up every other soda they drank for ONE YEAR, everyone in the world would have clean water to drink -- for life!

-OR-

If each American gave up 1/3 of their fast food for ONE YEAR, these 1 Billion people would have improved health conditions by eliminating preventable waterborne illnesses.

...and we'd all have to spend less money on weight loss.

For every $1 invested in water and sanitation, $8 is returned in
increased productivity and decreased health care costs (World Health Organization stats). That means you might just help fix the global economy while you're saving lives.

So I offer a proposition:
Let's Make This Our ONE YEAR

The solution is truly in our hands. Join me.

1. Give up every other soda or every third fast food meal. (or both).
2. Start a Charity:Water* account so you can donate the money you save.
3. Donate the money you saved on junk food. Donate once a day, or once a week, or once a month. Your pick.
4. Tell your friends. Tell them why you're doing this, and why they should join you.

It's easy to be appalled by the statistics. It's harder to take action. Join me in making this our ONE YEAR to solve the global water crisis.

    For skipping 2 fast food trips, 3 restaurant sodas, and 2 convenience store sodas. Man, I had a lot of catching up to do.

    For skipping a fast food trip, 4 sodas during various meals recently, and a thirst-buster soda that I usually drink on the way to Phoenix. (sorry, was away from the interwebs for a while)
